Project: Tree List Generation Database
The tree list generation database was developed for the Stand Management
Cooperative (SMC) at the University of Washington. The tree list generation database was designed to
generate simulated tree lists for Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga
menziesii) stands, western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla)
stands, and stands that are mixtures of these two species. Three
stand types are supported by the tree list generation database for
these two species: stands having at least 80% of their basal area
represented by one of these two species will be referred to as pure
stands for that species, stands having at least 50% of their basal
area represented by one of these two species will be referred to as
dominant stands for that species, and stand having less than 50% in
either or both of these species will be referred to as mixed stands.
The tree list generation database uses actual tree measurements from
forest stands spanning the Pacific Northwest from southern Oregon to
southern British Columbia, west of the Cascade Mountains. The tree
list generation process is broken down into two parts: a stand
classification procedure based on a multidimensional histogram and a
stand generation procedure based on a nearest neighbor criterion for
selecting the trees used to generate a simulated stand.
